It is possible to buy commercial, dried sourdough starter or you can be given some of someone else’s starter to use. While there is nothing wrong with these ways of getting your hands on a starter, I think there is a great advantage to making your own. There is something very personal about having your own starter and, at the beginning of what could be a lifetime of using it, working with your own from the very start of your sourdough journey is important because you are deeply connected to something you have made yourself. While this may sound a bit “out there,” trust me, it’s true.
